Kunezinto Translation There were things when I was young The young wished to be old The old looked after the young The young liked things that were reserved for the old The old hid things from the young The young respected the old The old and the young respected life Very calmly in case of bereavement Death was for old people When I was young I was afraid of the things reserved for old people But I was not afraid of death At Sunday School it was said Death and sleep are the same And those who sleep shall be awaken When I was young I was afraid of darkness and the funeral procession I was afraid of the sound of grave sand Falling like a drumbeat over a coffin With my remains inside Waking from the dead When I was young I was afraid of being hidden alive I was afraid of waking up in a hole Screaming inaudibly Over voices that leave gems of this world at the cemetery When I was young I was afraid of sleeping alone in my grave ...today the world has changed Overcrowded are graveyards And mortuaries The young await the old The old look up to the young The young and the old are fighting for life Death is life It is a path for the young and old Looking after my own flesh and blood I ask myself, sometimes: Bones of my blessing I wonder where will you end up When I don't wish upon you Even the steam of smoke Without a fire.

about

Spin Venek is a code.
A way of life.
Spin Venek is how Imfundamakhwela moves around its habitat.

SPIN -
i) to turn or cause to turn or whirl around quickly.

ii) to take a brief trip - "I'm going for a spin"

iii) to return/ to come back in the township.

iii) to spin means to hustle - to take without permission - to steal.

VENEK
i) a stylized spelling of vernac - as in vernacular/ provincial or unrefined.

ii) vernac from vernacular - as in everyday language, including slang, that is used by people to communicate daily.

ii) venek is often different from literary and formal language.

SPIN VENEK
Logic offers that these two words next to each other should mean something in line with "returning to a provincial or a local way of communicating." It does.

Still, the people who coined the term meant more than just returning to a local way of saying things. They were people who made a living by spinning. To them, the words were a code that meant whatever happens, DO NOT ROB YOURSELF.

yourself being your kind;
your family, your community, the people you share destiny with, somehow - even if its the graveyard.

Sonically, the project is inspired by the diverse musical heritage I was exposed to growing up in the peri-urban township of Mpumalanga. It moves from ambient to mbaqanga to jazz and kwaito seamlessy.

Spin Venek.
