about
Ihubo - A hymn.
Igama lami yigula lamaqiniso means my name is a calabash of truths. iSabelo saBafana iSabelo seSizwe. iSabelo sabaNtwana. iSabelo... it comes in abundance like an open meadow.
My mother is an artist. She arts with amagama (names/words).
At home, I watched her work life into flat words. Holding the air like a giant bird. Precise with every note. Giving and nurturing. uMom' Mkhokheli at Sunday School. My mother looked after children at the Swedish Free Church when I was a kid. Once she asked me to name the opening evangelists in the New Testament. And I did. "Matthew, Mark, Luke and John held the horse while I got on." It was also at this moment, or slightly thereafter, that I realized the role of istory in my remembering the biblical names. This realization would also burden the bald-I with questions: Where does this knowledge of abo Matthew put me, if I do not know the stories that inform the names immediate to mine? What does Sabelo mean before my sister's name? What's the relationship with the names of my brothers, who came before me? What's the story? Is there a story?
Beyond grannies and uncles, I wanted to know about the names in my mother's branch of the family tree. My interest was nest immediate. Where my mom, sis'Thuli, is the maqhuzu matriarch; where her voice is heard before any other. My mother has 4 children of her own. But she has raised more than 50 children in this lifetime. Family kids. Neighborhood kids. Church kids. Kids of kids. But from her womb, there is 4 of us. That is 4 humans that my mother was given the responsibility of "naming". A responsibility she carries out with the meticulousness of the air holding artist she is. From her Peacemaker first born to the last born where a sense of Victory is expressed, my mother uses names like beats in a story. The names of those who lived under her roof also add to this story. They tell a of a contemplative caregiver with a deep love for children. It's all in the names.
This piece is my first born's favorite joint kwi SPIN VENEK.
